The Bright, Hi-Tech Future of Food Preservation
For years, food contamination and food-related diseases have caused problems across the United States and in other countries around the world. The source of the issue is the minute bacteria that find their way into what we eat. However, a recent invention seems as though it has found the solution to this problem. The article states that “the clear way around the problem is to kill bacteria through means other than heat prior to preparation, so you can then cook food or not, to your liking, without having to worry about contamination.” A man named Balasubramaniam has discovered that by applying extreme pressure to foods, bacteria can be killed without causing any negative effect to the food itself. In this process, food is sealed in a plastic bag and placed into a water-filled compartment; through means of a piston and hydraulic fluid, a huge amount of pressure is built up inside the compartment and, within five minutes, is released. The food is then ready to be prepared and no longer contains living bacteria.
I believe this “high-pressure technology” could greatly benefit consumers around the world. As more and more foods are processed using this new system of purification, people will begin to feel much safer about what they buy and eat. This new invention will also cut down on the number of people who get sick or even die from eating contaminated food. I would imagine that people’s general health would increase as well.
